Fabric Care Guide & Stain Removal

At Milton & King, our fabrics are designed to be lived in, loved, and long-lasting. Each of our four luxurious bases — Linen Union, Linen Look Performance Weave, Plush Velvet, and Pure Belgian Linen — has been carefully chosen for its quality, texture, and timeless appeal. To ensure your fabric retains its beauty for years to come, we recommend following the care and cleaning advice below.

From everyday maintenance to addressing spills and stains, this guide is here to help you get the most from your fabric — keeping it looking fresh, vibrant, and beautifully tactile across upholstery, drapery, and soft furnishings.

Professional Cleaning

For deep cleaning, always engage a professional upholstery cleaner experienced with printed fabrics. They will ensure your Milton & King fabric is treated with the appropriate products and techniques for its specific fibre composition.

Atmospheric Yellowing

Environmental factors such as smoke or cooking fumes may cause a light yellow or brown tint, especially on pale-colored fabrics. Regular ventilation and gentle cleaning will help maintain the freshness and tone of your fabric.

Sun Damage

Extended exposure to UV rays can make fabric fibres brittle, leading to potential breakage when cleaned or handled. Protect your fabric by limiting exposure to harsh sunlight and rotating furnishings regularly to ensure even wear.

Fading & Sunlight

Consistent exposure to direct or reflected sunlight can cause fading or weaken fabric fibres over time. To preserve the integrity and vibrancy of your fabric, avoid direct sunlight where possible and consider using UV-protective window treatments. Even indirect sunlight can contribute to gradual fading, especially on lighter colorways.

Shrinkage

All natural and blended fibres are prone to minor shrinkage when washed or exposed to humidity. An allowance of up to 3% is considered an industry standard. Always account for this when measuring for drapery or upholstery.

Color Fastness

All fabrics, regardless of composition, will naturally fade over time. While our printing process and inks are designed for durability, no textile is completely color fast. Exposure to sunlight, heat, and moisture can accelerate fading, so take care to position furnishings thoughtfully and use appropriate window treatments where possible.

General Care

To keep your fabric fresh, vacuum regularly (at least every two weeks) using a soft brush attachment to remove dust and prevent soiling. Built-up dust and dirt can degrade fibres over time. For best results, we recommend professional cleaning every 12–18 months, and where possible, rotate reversible cushions weekly to ensure even wear.

Always refer to the recommended care code for your chosen base fabric, as each material may require slightly different cleaning methods.

Pilling

Pilling may occasionally occur as a result of normal daily wear and should not be considered a fault. As the fabric surface experiences friction, small fibres can twist together, forming tiny balls or “pills.” These can be easily removed using a battery-operated de-pilling tool available from most home or haberdashery stores. Removing surface pills will not affect the durability or performance of your fabric.

Extending the Life of Your Curtains

All Milton & King textiles are crafted to meet the highest industry standards and undergo rigorous testing to ensure long-lasting quality. To help preserve the beauty and performance of your curtains for years to come, a few simple steps can make all the difference:

  • Use a quality lining. A good lining not only adds insulation and improves drape but also helps protect your fabric from sun exposure and fading.
  • Rotate your curtains. Swap panels occasionally from one side of the track to the other to prevent one edge from being continually exposed to sunlight.
  • Allow for fullness. When designing your curtains, ensure there’s enough width to permit re-edging in the future if the fabric lightens slightly over time.
  • Add sheers for protection. Layer with sheer curtains that can remain closed during the day — reducing the impact of UV light while maintaining privacy and softness.

By following these simple measures, you’ll extend the life and appearance of your curtains, ensuring they remain as beautiful as the day they were hung.

Important Notes
  • Always use gentle blotting motions — never scrub.
  • Avoid excessive moisture on natural fabrics and Plush Velvet.
  • For large or set stains, professional cleaning is recommended to preserve colour and texture.
Lipstick

Gently scrape excess, apply rubbing alcohol sparingly, and blot. Avoid heavy rubbing on Velvet or Belgian Linen. Follow with a mild detergent solution, rinse with clear water, and finish with a vinegar-and-water rinse.

Excrement, Milk, Urine, or Vomit

Remove solids carefully, then blot with a white towel. Apply a 50/50 vinegar-and-water solution to neutralise odours and bacteria, then follow with a mild detergent solution. Rinse thoroughly and blot dry. For Plush Velvet, use minimal moisture and consult a professional if residue remains.

Grease

Blot to remove surface oil. For Performance Weave and Velvet, apply a small amount of dry-cleaning spirit and blot — avoid overwetting. For natural linens, use a mild detergent solution, rinse, and finish with a vinegar-and-water rinse.

Ink (Ballpoint or Water-Soluble)

Blot away excess ink. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol (safe on Performance Weave; test first on natural linens). Avoid direct solvent use on Plush Velvet; opt for dry-cleaning if required. Follow with a mild detergent solution, rinse, and finish with a vinegar-and-water rinse.

Red Wine

Blot immediately, then apply soda or tonic water and continue blotting. Use a mild detergent solution for natural or performance fabrics; rinse thoroughly. If necessary, apply diluted hydrogen peroxide, but avoid using it on Plush Velvet to prevent pile bleaching.

Tea & Coffee

Blot and apply a small amount of soda or tonic water, then blot again. Repeat as necessary. If needed, use a mild detergent-and-water solution and rinse thoroughly. For persistent stains, apply a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution — safe for Performance Weave, but test first on natural linens. Avoid peroxide on Plush Velvet; seek professional cleaning instead.

Blood

Blot excess liquid first. Dampen with cool water (avoid hot, which can set the stain), soak for one minute, and blot dry. Repeat until clear. For stubborn stains, use a mild detergent solution, rinse well, and finish with a 50/50 vinegar-and-water rinse. Avoid oversaturating linen or velvet bases to prevent rings or fibre distortion.

Chocolate

Scrape away excess. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol or dry-cleaning spirit and blot immediately. Follow with a mild detergent-and-water solution. Natural linens may darken slightly when damp; allow to air dry fully. Velvet should be gently blotted with minimal liquid to protect the pile. Rinse with clear water, then finish with a vinegar-and-water rinse.

Chewing Gum

Harden with ice and carefully lift away the residue. If needed, dab gently with rubbing alcohol or dry-cleaning spirit and blot immediately. For natural fibres (Linen Union or Belgian Linen), avoid prolonged contact with alcohol. Repeat as needed, then rinse with a mild detergent solution and clear water. For Plush Velvet, freeze and flake away gum — avoid solvents that could crush or discolour the pile. Finish with a 50/50 white vinegar and water rinse.
