Wallpaper: French Floral Wallpaper
What was the brief – what were the main goals?
The goal was to transform it from a “catch all”, non descript room to a warm and inviting guest space that visitors, family and friends — and the residents! — are excited to escape to!
Was wallpaper always a consideration?
Yes! We knew from the minute we first saw the space that we wanted to wrap the room in wallpaper for a cozy and unexpected surprise for this attic guest bedroom. We wanted something that was feminine, eclectic but controlled, and with a touch of Scandinavian charm. This M&K french floral print checked all the boxes, and then some!
What was the interaction with the client like – was it very collaborative? Did they give you full reign? What were some of the directions or guardrails you were given?
Our client is a true gem of a client! During the initial consultation, she gave us a few cues on wanting it to feel inviting and cozy for guests, with some fun color mixed in. From there she really let us run with it. She wasn’t afraid of bold patterns. We knew that since it was an attic with very little natural light, the floral wallpaper was going to be our ‘wow’ moment.

What designs were you considering?
We considered French Floral; the striped version and other bold prints … and kept coming back to the pattern of your French floral design and its mix of colors. It had just the right mount of bold pink, balanced with more neutral, earthy tones — and was the perfect repeat and scale for the space. We could get a bold, wallpapered ‘wrapped’ effect in this room with its many(!) low ceilinged angles — and with minimal waste.
How did you land on The French Floral Wallpaper?
It’s such a great print – just enough tension between its traditional roots in block printing and fun mix of colors. Which basically describes our client! Funny enough we originally thought the ivory colorway would pop more in the space — but as soon as we held up the natural colorway, we knew! It created such a welcoming and warm feeling with the vibrant flowers being the perfect unexpected punch we needed.

Who was the installer – did the directive to cover the vents, etc come from the installer or from you?
We are so lucky to work with the BEST partners! Our installer for this project was Carlos Baires of Premier Wallcovering Installations based in Woodbridge, VA. Carlos and his team are truly the gold standard and bring such great technical skill and knowledge to each job – we are so fortunate to work with them. This room has not one, not two, but three visible wall vents! So it was a no brainer to wrap them to help them disappear and Carlos’ team was up to the task. They did a perfect job, making them hardly noticeable.
Tell us about the other design elements in the room that really brought it all together?
The room – while small but mighty – really packs in some great moments. From the custom designed curved upholstered headboard our workroom fabricated for us, to the vibrant textile selections for the custom pillow and balloon roman shade window treatment, to the unexpected but still classic Boothbay Gray painted ceiling, your eye is happy moving from one end of the room to the other. And underfoot is a perfect and super cozy, subtle celadon striped wall to wall carpeting, expertly installed by our friends at C G Coe & Son.

How long did the project take – what was the proposed timeline and did it run on schedule?
We moved quickly and efficiently! The entire project, from our very first meeting with the client, to design guide development, installation and project completion took roughly 2.5 months, total.
Any final reflections on the project?
We feel lucky to have such wonderful clients and trade partners to help us bring our designs to life successfully. This project was a true team effort — and proof that wallpaper can make all the difference!
