WHAT IS METALLIC WALLPAPER?
Metallic Wallpapers typically use mylar on the face of the wallpaper. Yes, this is the same type of material you would see on a mylar birthday balloon. Both rely on a thin layer of metallized polyester film (typically BoPET, or biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate) coated with a vapor-deposited aluminum layer to create that reflective, mirror-like shine. This gives the “metallic” effect without using thick sheets of actual metal. The reflective polyester film is layered on the non-woven paper.
The areas where the print is absent, as it goes through the printer, are the areas where metallic features shine through. Depending on how much ink is involved, there may be more or less metallic quality that appears. Some designs will have small metallic features like a shiny leaf where there is more print across the face of the paper. Other designs have very little ink where the metallic quality really shines as the dominant feature.
WHAT TO KNOW
- There are important things to know when considering a metallic wallpaper:
- Room Lighting—natural light enhances the reflective quality, but artificial light can create dramatic effects too.
- Location – Metallic Wallpapers are not suitable for bathrooms, laundry rooms or high humidity environments. Metallics can stain, rust and transmit electricity (more on that later).
- Budget – Expect to pay more due to the premium materials. Being fancy isn’t cheap. Also, factor in professional installation costs if you’re not experienced.
Installation
- Make sure your walls are properly prepared. They need to be smooth and flaw-free since the shine amplifies any bumps or dents.
- BEWARE! Turn off the power for any electrical outlets in the room while you are installing. The metallic aspect of the paper can prove dangerous as it easily transmits electricity, especially when wet, which is why it can be particularly dangerous to install in bathrooms. Wait until the paste dries before turning the power back on.
- Be mindful not to crease the wallpaper. Any creases you make in the metallic face of the paper may be impossible to remove.
- Paste can either be applied to the wall or directly to the back of the paper.
- While we typically recommend Roman Pro 838 Paste, if your walls are very tall and gravity is going to fight with the weight of the paper, Roman 234 with it’s stronger hold is also an option for this heavier substrate.
- Noticeable Seams – Seams can be more prominent in metallic wall coverings. Because of the reflective quality of the paper, the shine can be emphasized where the panels of wallpaper meet.
It is highly recommended that you hire a professional to install metallic wallpaper.

Care
- Cleaning: Wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could scratch the surface. Do not rub.
- Damage Prevention: Keep away from direct heat sources or high humidity to prevent peeling. If scratches occur, touch up with matching paint or consult a pro for repairs.
