What is Metallic Wallpaper?
Metallic Wallpapers typically use Mylar on the face of the wallpaper. Yes, this is the same type of material you would see on a Mylar birthday balloon. Both rely on a thin layer of metallized polyester film (typically BoPET, or biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate) coated with a vapor-deposited aluminum layer to create that reflective, mirror-like shine. This gives the “metallic” effect without using thick sheets of actual metal. The reflective polyester film is layered on the non-woven paper.
The areas where the print is absent, as it goes through the printer, are the areas where metallic features shine through. Depending on how much ink is involved, there may be more or less metallic quality that appears. Some designs will have small metallic features like a shiny leaf where there is more print across the face of the paper. Other designs have very little ink where the metallic quality really shines as the dominant feature.
What to know
There are important things to know when considering a metallic wallpaper:
- Room Lighting – natural light enhances the reflective quality, but artificial light can create dramatic effects too.
- Location – Metallic Wallpapers are not ideal for bathrooms, laundry rooms or high humidity environments. Metallics can corrode, discolor or degrade from repeated moisture exposure over time.
- Budget – Expect to pay more due to the premium materials. Being fancy isn’t cheap. Also, factor in professional installation costs if you’re not experienced.
Installation
- Make sure your walls are properly prepared. They need to be smooth and flaw-free since the shine amplifies any bumps or dents.
- Because Metallic Wallpaper can conduct electricity, it is recommended that power be shut off at the breaker during installation to avoid shock. Wait until the wallpaper is dry and trim carefully around power outlets and fixtures so that there is no contact or overlap of metal parts.
- Be mindful not to crease the wallpaper. Any creases you make in the metallic face of the paper may be impossible to remove.
- Paste can either be applied to the wall or directly to the back of the paper.
- While we typically recommend Roman Pro 838 Paste, if your walls are very tall or you will be installing on the ceiling and gravity is going to fight with the heavier weight of the paper, Roman 234 with it’s stronger hold is a viable paste option for this heavier substrate.
- The reflective qualities that give metallic wall coverings their luminous appeal can also make panel transitions more apparent in certain lighting. Experienced installers understand how to work with these materials for a polished result.

Care
- Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap to remove dirt and other marks.
- Damage Prevention – Keep away from direct heat sources or high humidity to prevent peeling. If scratches occur, touch up with matching paint or consult a pro for repairs.
Metallic wallpaper brings a touch of instant luxury and glamour to any space, transforming ordinary walls into eye-catching focal points with its shimmering, reflective surface. One of its standout benefits is the ability to bounce light around the room, making darker or smaller areas feel brighter, more open, and surprisingly spacious—ideal for hallways, powder rooms, or rooms with limited natural light. This light-reflecting quality adds depth and dimension, creating a dynamic, ever-changing effect as lighting shifts throughout the day, while also evoking sophistication and high-end style associated with metals like gold and silver.
Use as an accent in bedrooms for a cozy glow or in living rooms for a bold statement. Pair gold tones with neutral furniture for elegance, or silver with modern minimalism. For small spaces, use it on one wall to create the illusion of depth.
